We are great admirers of John Forrest's wines, but have recently discovered the delights of his Syrah from his own vineyards from Gimblett Gravels in Hawkes Bay. This region is renowed for its concentrated reds from Bordeaux varieties, but we love the peppery, Northern Rhone-style Syrahs which have elegant fruit and complex fragrance. Move over Otago Pinot, these Syrahs are the new kings of NZ. |

We are great fans of Kumeu River's Chardonnays. These are without fear on contradiction the best Chardonnays in NZ, and possibly some of the closest examples to Burgundy found outside of that region. Also produced here is a superb Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, which is quite different from others from this region - if anything it is more like Sauvignons from the Loire. |
